The Benefits of Yogurt

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Yogurt is a delicious, healthy food. It’s great as a snack on it’s own, mixed with fruit, granola or muesli. It’s also a fabulous extra to add in smoothies or even on rice.

It is offered as a health food today. Eating one or two cups on most days is very beneficial for your health. When its important components, namely live cultures (probiotics), protein, calcium and B vitamins, work together, they are responsible to help mitigate the following conditions:

1. Lactose Intolerance: Many people can’t digest milk, but eating yogurt daily can help them get the calcium they need. You see, the probiotics in the yogurt have already digested the lactose in the milk allowing those who are lactose intolerant to enjoy this food that is high in calcium!

2. Allergies: Since probiotics affect the entire skin surface, which includes every area that has contact with the outside world, we can safely say that what can improve the digestive system can improve our nasal passages. Studies have shown that babies who eat yogurt and take in probiotics from as young as 3 months of age, have a better chance to avoid many allergies, especially eczema.

3. Cancer: The probiotics in the yogurt help neutralize mutagens that cause cancer, so eating yogurt is helpful in reducing the chance of colon cancer as well as breast cancer. Probiotics encourage the growth of the good bacteria in our digestive system and it limits the growth of the bad bacteria that doesn’t allow us to digest food properly. They also encourage the growth of microflora that promotes the development of cancer. Yogurt may not take away the cancer if you already have it, but it does reduce the chance of you getting it.

4. Cholesterol Reduction: Yogurt helps reduce bile acids, which in turn decreases the absorption of cholesterol form the gastrointestinal tract. In this way, it helps you regulate your cholesterol levels.

5. Diarrhea: Since the probiotics stimulate the immune system by limiting the growth of bad bacteria, and stimulating the growth of good bacteria, yogurt can also help alleviate the symptoms of diarrhea.

6. Vaginal Infections and Urinary Tract Infections: Once again, this is possible because of the live cultures/probiotics that are found in yogurt.

As we can see, the probiotics in yogurt really enhance our health! It promotes the growth of good bacteria in our digestive system and reduces the growth of the bad bacteria thus helping to alleviate lactose intolerance, allergies, cancer, diarrhea, vaginal infections and urinary tract infections.

Probiotics are not the only beneficial ingredient of the yogurt, though. Don’t forget that it is also high in calcium and in protein. The calcium helps us reduce the chance of osteoporosis and helps us have strong teeth. The protein helps our muscles to get stronger. Without muscles we aren’t able to function, to do the activities we do everyday.

Ways To Eat Healthy At A Chinese Restaurant

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Chinese food is one of the most delicious types of cuisine available to enjoy today. The wonderful thing about this food is that it tastes so good. Many of us love to visit favorite Chinese restaurants or Chinese buffets and enjoy this mouth-watering cuisine. Just think of the great Chinese dishes many of us are so used to enjoying. The authentic Chinese delicacies are rich in vegetables and usually cooked with little or no oil, owing to which they can be made a part of a low-calorie diet. However, the food offered at the Chinese restaurants in the West is nothing but a ‘Westernized’ version of the traditional Chinese food. These American-Chinese and Canadian-Chinese cuisines are rich in fat and calories and hence, it is very necessary to make healthy choices from the Western-Chinese food menu if you are following a strict low-calorie diet. Following are a few guidelines that will help to eat healthy at your favorite Chinese restaurant:

When it comes to placing an order for appetizers, you should avoid foods like egg rolls and spareribs. Instead, you can opt for egg drop or wonton soups. Any low calorie broth-based soups will best suit your diet plan. Other main course dishes that you can order include Chinese delicacies, such as the Shrimp Chow Mien, Moo Goo Gai Pan, Steamed Spring Rolls, Teriyaki Chicken Skewer, and Chicken served with broccoli and Chop Suey. Any dish that includes steamed or boiled chicken or shrimp, and steamed vegetables is a good choice. Do not order dishes that are made with sweet and thick sauces. Also, avoid any food that is battered or floured and then deep-fried. A dish prepared with loads of vegetables and little oil is the best choice you can make. Instead of the deep-fried foods, you can opt for the stir-fried, roasted or broiled ones.

Although fried rice is one of the most popular Chinese foods, it should be strictly avoided if you are really keen on following your low-calorie diet plan. Fried rice, especially the one made with eggs, is rich in fats and cholesterol and is a big ‘NO’ when it comes to including Chinese foods in your diet plan. If you are fond of rice, you can try brown rice that is healthier than fried rice. Think twice before placing an order for dished that are described as “crispy” or “battered” in the food menu. Also watch out for dishes that include noodles, chow mien, and marinades. Other bad choices would include Kung Pao chicken, crispy duck, dishes laden with rich sauces like Hoi sin, dumplings, and lo mien.

Chinese foods are the healthy benefits.Very often vegetables are balanced with entrees and fried dishes come with steamed dishes or soups. The majority of people believe that a Chinese cuisine is healthy and well balanced. There are also several different styles within this cuisine. They include Mandarin cuisine, Cantonese cuisine, Szechwan cuisine and Hunan cuisine. Each of these cuisines has its own unique style and come from the four major regions of China. To conclude, Chinese cuisine offers a lot of healthy choices that can be made a part of your health diet, but you need to be prepared before visiting your favorite Chinese restaurant.
